TRANSFORMERS VANDALS SENTENCED TO ELEVEN YEARS BEHIND BARS

The DCI welcomes the sentencing of two suspects who were found guilty for vandalising Kenya Power and Lighting Company(KPLC) transformers and stealing energy equipment.

Amos Swahili and Ernest Kemboi who had notoriously darkened parts of the North Rift and Western regions with a series of transformers vandalism were cornered in Elgeyo Marakwet on July 15, 2025 by detectives attached to KPLC. They were subsequently arrested and processed for arraignment.

Yesterday, February 23, 2026, the Butali Law Court found the two guilty of the charges, acknowledging that the case had been proven beyond reasonable doubt thus, sentencing each to eleven(11) years imprisonment.

While spending behind bars, the two agents of darkness will battle similar charges that are currently ongoing at Iten Law Courts and Eldoret Law Courts.

The sentencing is a vital milestone in efforts to combat vandalism of critical national installations across the country.

About

The establishment, development and growth of Criminal Investigations Department can be traced to the evolvement of the Kenya Police to which it remains one of the key formations. The first police officers were recruited in 1887 by the Imperial British East Africa Company, I.B.E.A. to provide security for stores in Mombasa. It was from these humble beginnings that the Kenya Police was born.
