SUSPECT CHARGED FOR PUBLISHING FALSE INFORMATION

Detectives from the Special Crime Unit (SCU) have today arraigned Boniface Mulinge Muteti before the Milimani Law Courts, facing charges for disseminating false information on his X account.

On December 6, 2025, Muteti, under the username Mulinge Muteti, made a provocative post to wit, “if you come across anything owned by politicians, Anza kuchukua, these people have never worked anywhere, innovated or invented anything. Everything they own was stolen from Kenyans and must be returned to Kenyans. Arm yourselves and prepare for the coming uprising”, knowing it to be false and intending to incite violence among the public, in direct violation of Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act No. 5 of 2018.

During his appearance in court, Muteti pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and was granted bail set at Sh15,000.

The case is scheduled for a pretrial hearing on December 30, 2025. The DCI reminds Kenyans that spreading false information online is a criminal offence and urges responsible use of social media.

About

The establishment, development and growth of Criminal Investigations Department can be traced to the evolvement of the Kenya Police to which it remains one of the key formations. The first police officers were recruited in 1887 by the Imperial British East Africa Company, I.B.E.A. to provide security for stores in Mombasa. It was from these humble beginnings that the Kenya Police was born.
