What looked like a regular consignment of bananas was in fact a cover for a haul of cannabis sativa, after detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU), Coast Region, working jointly with officers from Mariakani Police Station intercepted a passenger bus carrying the illicit cargo from Busia to Mombasa.
Acting on actionable intelligence, the team carried out a targeted operation at the Mariakani Weighbridge where they stopped a Tahmeed bus for a quick search.
The search peeled back the deception, uncovering five gunny bags with cannabis sativa, cleverly hidden beneath loads of bananas as a last-ditch effort to get past the law.
It was established that the package belonged to a 45-year-old passenger, Evelyn Atieno Ochola, who was arrested on the spot.
Atieno is currently undergoing processing pending arraignment. Meanwhile, the recovered narcotics have been detained as exhibits.
