The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), in collaboration with St. John Ambulance Kenya, today conducted a drowning-prevention and emergency-response sensitisation programme at the DCI Headquarters to commemorate World Drowning Prevention Day.

Held under the global theme, β€œUnite Against the Tide,” the programme was organised by the DCI Clinic to raise awareness on drowning prevention while equipping officers with practical life-saving knowledge and skills to respond effectively to water-related emergencies.

Participants were taken through the Drowning Chain of Survival. This internationally recognised framework outlines the critical steps in preventing drowning, recognising emergencies, conducting safe rescues, administering first aid and ensuring timely access to advanced medical care.Β

The training also emphasised the importance of preparedness, public awareness and coordinated emergency response in reducing preventable drowning deaths.

Officers were encouraged to apply the knowledge and skills acquired both in the execution of their duties and within their communities, where informed action and timely intervention can make the difference between life and death.

The sensitisation was attended by Deputy Director Planning, Mr. Kimathi Mutonga, SSP; the in-charge, DCI Clinic, Dr. Michael Kabaara, SP; St. John Ambulance Kenya trainer, Mr. Ben Ithagu; and officers drawn from various directorates across the DCI.

The initiative underscores the DCI’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the health, safety and well-being of its officers while supporting national and global efforts to prevent drowning through education, preparedness and strengthened emergency response.

About

The establishment, development and growth of Criminal Investigations Department can be traced to the evolvement of the Kenya Police to which it remains one of the key formations. The first police officers were recruited in 1887 by the Imperial British East Africa Company, I.B.E.A. to provide security for stores in Mombasa. It was from these humble beginnings that the Kenya Police was born.
